When contractors and facility managers tell us about their retrofit challenges, the story is always the same: traditional rewiring is expensive, disruptive, and time-consuming. Battery-powered alternatives sound good until you're managing replacement schedules across hundreds of switches.

That's why we developed ILLUMRA's wireless, self-powered lighting controls. Designed for commercial retrofits where traditional wiring isn't practical.

How Energy-Harvesting Switches Work

ILLUMRA switches use kinetic energy harvesting. Press the switch, and that mechanical action generates just enough power to transmit a wireless signal to the receiver controlling your lights.

No wires to the switch. No batteries to maintain. Just reliable operation using Kinetic technology proven over 20+ years of experience.

Two simple components:

The wireless switch generates power from each press and transmits via 902 MHz signal up to 100 feet indoors. Rated for hundreds of thousands of operations.

The receiver module installs at the fixture or junction box and controls the lighting load. This is the only component requiring electrical connection, and can be wired into existing wiring, no new wiring required.

Installation: 10-15 Minutes Per Room

Step 1: Install the Receiver Mount at the fixture or junction box. With power off, wire between line voltage and the load. Comparable to installing an occupancy sensor.

Step 2: Pair the Switch Enter linking mode on the receiver, then press the top button on the switch 3 times. Takes 30 seconds. Configure multiple switches per receiver or vice versa based on your needs.

Step 3: Mount the Switch Anywhere Use adhesive backing or screws—no electrical box required. Works on drywall, glass, concrete, metal, tile, or furniture. Position switches where they make operational sense, not just where wiring exists.

Where Wireless Switches Make Sense

Historic Buildings – Add modern controls without damaging protected walls or architecture.

Office Retrofits – Relocate badly positioned switches or add controls to glass conference rooms without extensive electrical work.

Educational Facilities – Install during occupied periods without classroom shutdowns.

Hospitality – Minimize room downtime and eliminate battery maintenance across properties.

Fast-Track Projects – Meet aggressive schedules when traditional electrical timelines aren't feasible.

What You Need to Know

Range and Reliability Our 902 MHz EnOcean protocol provides up to 100-foot indoor range and doesn't interfere with WiFi or Bluetooth. Commercial-grade components rated for high-traffic applications.

LED Compatibility Our receivers integrate with LED drivers and various load types—ideal for projects already upgrading to LED.

Energy Code Compliance Supports ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, and Title 24 requirements.

Building Codes Wireless switches are control devices, not line-voltage switches. Electrical work occurs only at the receiver. Always verify local requirements.

The Real Cost Comparison

Wireless switches cost more per unit than traditional toggles. But project costs must include:

  • Eliminated wire runs and conduit
  • Reduced labor (15 minutes vs. hours per location)
  • No wall cutting, patching, or painting
  • Zero battery replacement over system life

For retrofits requiring extensive new wiring, the total installed cost typically favors wireless. Facility managers particularly value zero ongoing maintenance.

Why ILLUMRA

We've specialized in battery-free wireless lighting controls for over two decades:

  • 25+ years of proven energy-harvesting technology
  • Made in the USA with responsive support
  • EnOcean protocol for building automation integration
  • Purpose-built for commercial and institutional environments
